With more than 15 years experience in fundraising, environmental campaigning and organization building, my goal is to help your organization succeed by putting my expertise to work for you.
Many years ago, as a teenager, I felt the need to help others. So one summer during high school I joined Amigos de las Americas and volunteered to vaccinate the indigenous communities of the Ecuadorian Amazon against yellow fever and to help village communities design and build latrines to improve health and sanitation. It was one of the more rewarding experiences of my life.
This experience helped shape my desire to dedicate a portion of my life to helping to build a better world.
After graduating from Stanford University, I joined Earth Island Institute to work with various environmental and community-action projects. I subsequently served on the Board of Directors with founder and legendary conservationist Dave Brower, a man whose bold vision of action has always inspired me.
After a few years, I moved on to Communities for a Better Environment where I first got my feet wet in advocacy campaigning and my dogged fundraising doubled grant income.
After CBE, I began my 10 year tenure at the Sea Turtle Restoration Project, as the Associate Director and Communications Director. Most recently, I was the Campaign Director responsible for developing new programs, managing five campaigners, raising foundation and individual income, and serving on the management team.
One of the key program areas that I led was the Turtles and Trade program that helped catalyze the interest of the public and other NGOs around the conflict between the World Trade Organization and the US Endangered Species Act as it related to sea turtles.
Additionally, during that time, I consulted for Earthjustice, Global Community Monitor, Project Underground, the Louisiana Bucket Brigade and other environmental organizations.
I am the author of several publications including Slain by Trade: The Attack of the World Trade Organization on Endangered Sea Turtles and the US Endangered Species Act, Dead Turtles: Good for the Global Economy, and Boiling Point: The Impact of Climate Change on Sea Turtles and the Urgent Need to Take Action. I also served as a producer on the documentary video Last Journey for the Leatherback.
In addition to my consulting business, I am launching a new environmental organization, Oceans and Communities, which works with coastal communities to defend the oceans from large-scale industrial threats. A key part of this work is helping to build the capacity and voice of coastal communities and the organizations that represent them through campaign assistance, media relations work, and fundraising support.
